  33. Majordomo Mailing List Server soon (hopefully!) but there is only one
  34. slight problem, I don't know how to setup Majordomo.  Can someone out
  35. there help?  As this will put Majordomo on a faster machine and you will
  36. get your digests more quickly than with the current buggy mailserv digest
  37. software... Thanks.

  102. You don't have to install anything. Just install the w95 over your existing
  103. windows 3.1 or 3.11
  104. and W95 wil automaticly get the drivers.

  117. I downloaded DMP 4.00 and tried it out with my GUS MAX.  I was very pleased
  118. to discover that it supports the MAX codec (so i could do digital reverb,
  119. for instance, and proper surround).  However, occasionally every sound that
  120. comes from the right channel is replaced with loud scratching noises.
  121.  
  122. I suspect this is a problem with DMP and not my GUS for two reasons:
  123.     - the noises hit in a similar rhythm to the notes on the right channel
  124.     - i can make the problem go away by telling DMP to play everything on
  125.       the left channel, then panning the channels back to the right.  i can
  126.       also duplicated the problem by panning enough channels to the right
  127.       side (seems to start when some amplitude threshold is passed).
  128.  
  129. Has anyone had this experience?  I'm just looking for confirmation so i can
  130. rest easy it's not a hardware problem.

  132. As a (possibly) related issue, playing waveforms on the codec in Windows
  133. seems to become static-filled occasionally as well, although the noise in
  134. that case is not nearly as annoying (the original wave is still audible).
  135. Every once in a while, when this occurs, it sounds like the original wave
  136. is being clipped short, making rasping and clicking noises every time it
  137. gets a little loud.  I can work around this usually be stopping and playing
  138. again, or sometimes i need to quit the application and restart it.

  155. I have a GUS v2.2,  and accidentally had my AT bus running at 16.666Mhz.
  156. It seems now that DMA operations will no longer work.   That is,  I
  157. think the DMA has been fried.
  158.  
  159. All programs that DMA - playfile,  playmidi,  Windows,  Doom,  will no
  160. longer work.  Programs that send data through the port still work,  eg:
  161. One Must Fall,  Gusmod.
  162.  
  163. Is there any way I can fix/replace the fried parts involved.  My GUS is
  164. no longer covered by warranty :(.

  184.      I got it to work with the 3.53 disk set that was included on the GUS
  185.      Experience CD.  I just installed the 3.59 disk set and haven't tried 
  186.      it since.

  189.      3.53 Drivers.  Everything worked great.  Installed 3.59 drivers.  ???

  235. I can get Mega-Em to work fine if I use the -NROFF flag to turn off
  236. Roland emulation. I then get digital audio when I select SB in a
  237. game's configuration.

  239. Everytime I try Mega-Em to have it emulate Roland, it crashes, displays
  240. EMM386 exceotion errors, and/or reboots my machine!

  242. I'm not going to bore you with my AUTOEXEC and CONFIG files, but does
  243. anyone else recognize this problem and know of any fixes?

  245. For the record, I've *never* gotten Mega-Em to work successfully with
  246. a game doing both Roland and SB, and I've never gotten just the
  247. Roland emulation to work either. Only SB alone.

  282. Well I have read the manual and followed the steps described in the FAQ, but I
  283. am still having no luck. I don't get a peep out of my Ultrasound in Windows
  284. 3.1. The drivers are installed, the settings match up, but when I go to the
  285. Sounds control panel and test a sound everything is silent, even although
  286. Windows thinks it is playing. I have the latest Windows drivers in the
  287. correct places, so what is going on? Can anyone help?
  288.  
  289. Another less irritating thing is that on my new Pentium machine, when testing
  290. the Soundblaster settings with SETGUS.EXE it reports a failure on every IRQ
  291. between 2 and 7. The good news is that the only game that I have come across
  292. so far that refuses to work with SBOS on my machine even although it works on
  293. others is Colonization (which has passable Midi music anyway).

  314.     Good day fellow GUSers.  I just had a friend install a PANASONIC 
  315. CD-ROM in my system which has a regular Gravis Ultrasound.  When we went 
  316. to plug the cable into the plug on the soundcard it was smaller than the 
  317. plug.  We went to a local computer store and first off they tried to sell 
  318. me a sound blaster - which I refused.  Secondly, they told me I could buy 
  319. just a straight controller card.  Is this the right way of doing it, and 
  320. if not what should I do?  Thanks.

  349. In reference to your question what CD-ROM drive should I get for use on 
  350. my GUS I would recomend a TEAC CD-55A 4quad drive.  While not a true 4 
  351. quad it does perform faster than a 2x drive and uses a panasonic 
  352. interface and can be used with your GUS Max.  I have one at home and have 
  353. seen them via mailorder for as low as $200.  The only problems that I had 
  354. with installation was with having all of my software parameters set 
  355. correctly.  Good luck with your choice and if you get the Teac and need 
  356. help to configure it please e-mail me.

  358. ~~ Note, for those of you poised to flame, I am fully aware of the 
  359. ~~ limitations of this drive.  While it comes up short in tests as a 
  360. ~~ 4x drive, it should do a fine job playing most games and is cheap. The

  387. Are you sure you have the file: IMUSE.INI in your c:\dark ?
  388. If not. Thats it. It solved the problem for me.
  389. By the way. I_ve had the opportunity to play DF on both
  390. a GUS and an AWE32  - The GUS Sounds Incredible!! , when
  391. the AWE32 just sounds awfull. Exactly what did the guys
  392. at Creative Labs do wrong? = )

  403. Please keep further posts like this out of the digest.  Not to mention 
  404. the fact that this sort of thing doesn't have much to do with using the 
  405. UltraSound by itself, I would guess that almost everyone who gets this 
  406. list already owns a GUS or is set on getting one (or is unsubscribing to 
  407. the list because they'd rather go for something else).

  411. Anyone manage to record 44Khz 16-bit properly?  I tried to record a large 
  412. (2 minute) section off a CD.  Doing it at any other setting than 44/16bit 
  413. worked okay.  But when I tried this, the data was, well, completely wrong 
  414. ;)  Sounded like recording static, or more like playing back 16-bit u-law 
  415. data at 8-bit (a quite nasty sound).  Any pointers?  (Using Max board 
  416. rev. 1.6, disk set 3.59)

  437. I just got the final Win95 beta. It didn't have any settings for the GUS
  438. MAX. I tried to install 3.59 using the Win95 install applet but it hung the
  439. system during the hardware setting check. I tried to install it from the
  440. Win95 Dos bootup, but that also hung on the setting check. I installed
  441. Win95 to another disk so it wouldn't overwrite my current win3.11/doc6.22
  442. setup and so it doesn't see the GUS driver installed for win3.11. Has anyone
  443. been able to install the GUS drivers in Win95? Does Gravis have an email
  444. tech support number anymore?

  455. I am having a problem with AVI files under Windows 3.1 and the last few revs
  456. of the GUS drivers. The trouble is that AVI files played with no sound, until
  457. one pauses and resumes them. Then they are fine. I'm using VfW1.1d and 5.50
  458. of the GUS drivers. I've tried reduces buffers to 512 (withOUT the fixed box
  459. checked. Should it be checked?) and that didn't help. I can't say when this
  460. problem started, but I KNOW it worked a while ago, before upgrading the GUS
  461. drivers. I've noticed this mentioned in the digest a couple times, without any
  462. solution...
